Going Blue In The Bluetooth Technology

The word is an anglicized version of Danish Blatand, the name of the tenth - King Harald I of Denmark who united dissonant Danish tribes into a single kingdom. The implication is that it does the same, that is, uniting communication protocols into one universal standard. Bluetooth is proudly defined as an open wireless protocol for exchanging data over short distances from fixed and mobile devices, creating Personal Area Networks (PANs).

It has probably proved the next big thing in the advancing world of cellular communication. With an approximated millions of people using it ever since its inception, a decade ago. Bluetooth connects several devices overcoming the problems of synchronization.

The Technology used is called frequency-hopping spread spectrum. This chops the data being sent and transmits chunks of it on up to 79 frequencies. In its basic mode, the modulation is Gaussian frequency-shift keying (GFSK), and can achieve a gross data rate of 1 Mb/s.

Bluetooth provides a way to connect and exchange information between mobile phones, telephones, laptops, PCs, printers, Global Positioning System receivers, video game consoles... through a secure, globally unlicensed Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) 2.4 GHz short range radio frequency bandwidth. And, did you know that you can use your bluetooth enabled phone as a modem for your PC? Let me tell you that the technology just has a wide list of applications that we can't complete, and it's expanding every second!

Bluetooth specifications are developed and licensed by a privately held trade association called Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), which was founded in September 1998 and consists of companies in the area of: telecommunication, computing, networking and consumer electronics. And so is the name: Bluetooth, and logo trademarked by the SIG association.

And don't forget that new specification versions are being released everyday!

But in this world, full security threats, Bluetooth is no exception as it suffers privacy and identity theft. This include Blue-jacking, Blue-snarfing and Blue-bugging. And the caution remains:Turn off your Bluetooth device when not using it!!!.
